Join us on Monday 2 June 2025 at 17:00 BST (UK time) for the open launch session of our June Summer School course - the second of two Summer School short courses this year - where we will learn, sing and record two songs celebrating strength, arranged for choir by Pete Churchill:

Something Inside So Strong by Labi Siffre, arr. Pete Churchill

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free, by Dick Dallas and Billy Taylor, arr. Pete Churchill

Both pieces are deeply connected to the fight for justice, dignity and equality. So Strong was inspired by singer-songwriter Labi Siffre’s response to apartheid and his own experiences of homophobia, while I Wish I Knew… became an anthem of the American Civil Rights Movement, largely due to Nina Simone’s unforgettable performance of the song.

We will be exploring and singing these inspirational anthems during Pride Month and around Juneteenth - two distinct commemorations that each honour progress and resilience in the face of oppression. This course is a celebration of the power of music to carry truth, strength and hope.

Led by Choir of the Earth’s marvellous Musical Director, Ben England, Summer School is always a highlight of the year, bringing singers from around the world together to explore an exciting selection of music.

Whether you’ve enjoyed singing classical gems or contemporary hits in the past - or even if you’ve only ever sung in the shower - this course promises to deliver a memorable, inspiring choral experience.

Our course launches are free and open to all, so please do stop by - live or later at the same link - to hear this fantastic music and experience our world-class resources.
