The Lord’s Prayer (from African Sanctus by David Fanshawe)

Course launch 24 September 2020
Course Director Ellie Slorach

About this course

Taken from David Fanshawe’s 1972 masterpiece African Sanctus, The Lord’s Prayer is a short and expressive work originally written for soprano and alto voices. However, this course featured a specially arranged version including tenors and basses, so that all members could take part.

In African Sanctus, the Latin Mass is interwoven with live field recordings of traditional African music captured by the composer himself during a journey along the Nile between 1969 and 1973, from the Mediterranean Sea to Lake Victoria. The complete work consists of thirteen movements and follows the path of that remarkable expedition. The Lord’s Prayer forms one of these movements.

Under the direction of conductor Ellie Slorach, singers from around the world learned The Lord’s Prayer through a live online rehearsal and accompanying rehearsal tracks for each voice part, recorded by Kantos Chamber Choir. The piano accompaniment was performed by the composer himself, David Fanshawe.

Participants recorded their parts at home, and the final performance was produced entirely remotely.

Concert Performance: 8 October 2020
